Tang Yi-ting (唐藝庭) "Layered Space", Hung Sheng-hsiung (洪聖雄) "Stacked Shell"
"Layered Space" by Tang Yi-ting (recipient of the 2022 Taiwan Art New Look Award Jury Prize)
A house becomes a home only after people live in it; each house has a different structure and story.
The residences in a military dependents' village grow and change with their residents, slowly taking on the character of each household.
The artist uses construction materials from different periods to trace the trajectories of past lives: brick walls, cement, mosaic tiles, and corrugated sheets symbolize the additions and changes across different eras.
From single-entry, double-sloped black-tiled roofs and bamboo-lattice mud walls to the intricate, undulating spaces and alleyways,
the work tells the story of the place within the Chingshui Military Dependents' Village, which is interwoven with multiple historical traces and ethnic cultures.
The work takes inspiration from architectural forms found in past imagery,
seeking out traces of different existing construction materials, splicing textures and compositions to create windows on the house.
Acrylic intaglio plates are transformed into views looking into the past, extending the volume of the dwelling to create an aggregate of home.
Materials: Cement, woodwork, MDF, acrylic paint, acrylic intaglio plates
"Stacked Shell" by Hung Sheng-hsiung (selected for the 2020 Taiwan Art New Look Award)
The work "Stacked Shell" departs from the everyday act of "cracking an eggshell," overlapping sculptural objects with the space of the military dependents' village to reveal their intricate layers.
The shell is thin yet resilient; its rounded, simple form makes the details of its deformation clearly visible.
The spatial layers of the work not only point to the textural stacking after the object's formation but also metaphorically allude to the layered techniques of the construction process and the repetitive piling of actions.
"Stacked Shell" reveals the layered membranes of time and space, presenting a landscape that is both real and abstract.
Materials: Fiberglass, genuine stone sinter coating
Artists: Tang Yi-ting, Hung Sheng-hsiung
Venue: Chingshui Military Dependents' Village Cultural Park, West Houses No. 2 & 4 Courtyard
Time: Permanent exhibition starting October 1, 2024
