National Museum of Natural Science "Fantastic Nature" Permanent Exhibition

Date: 2024-01-19 — 2034-12-31 Organizer: 國立自然科學博物館
The National Museum of Natural Science welcomes a magnificent transformation of its Life Science Hall. The new permanent exhibition "Fantastic Nature" is now open. The exhibition area is planned with 5 major themes, jointly curated by nearly 20 researchers from the museum, presenting the rules and mysteries of the natural world in an accessible way. Upon entering the exhibition hall, visitors are first greeted by a giant over-400-year-old Taiwan spruce specimen. In the experience area, visitors can use their sense of smell and touch to feel its scent and texture. There is also a nearly 4-meter-long mechanical squid that can be operated manually, eye-catching and cool.

The "Fantastic Nature" permanent exhibition area is located on the B1 floor of the Life Science Hall, covering an area of 253 ping. From planning and evaluation to design proposals, it embodies the efforts of 20 co-curators, the renowned Yu-chiang Design Company, and its collaborating teams. After more than three years of communication and refinement, its predecessor "Numbers and Shapes" has been completely transformed.

"Fantastic Nature" includes 5 units: "Wow Nature! Hi Science," "Round or Not: The Science of Eggs," "Move It: Biomechanics," "Chase: Computation and Behavior," and "Storytelling: Exploring Nature, Discovering Science," meticulously introducing the diversity, forms, functions, behaviors, and scientific exploration of the natural world. Visitors can freely explore a dazzling array of scientific stories.

Museum permanent exhibitions generally last 10 to 20 years. Thanks to technology, the academic community may now "discover new species" or "establish new theories" every few years. Therefore, the display cases are specially designed as "front-opening" to facilitate future updates of exhibits or specimens based on academic discoveries and keep pace with the times. They can also interact with the audience to meet the needs of lectures or guided tours.

The National Museum of Natural Science's Life Science Hall was completed in 1988. The first director, Han Pao-te, invited British designer James Gardner to design it, and it was produced by the British company Beck & Politzer. With the mysteries of nature as its theme, it displays the wonderful evolution from ancient creatures to modern humans and has been very popular with the public. At that time, "Numbers and Shapes" had various fun interactive installations, paired with simple, easy-to-understand, and extended mathematical science concepts, opening the horizons of natural science for countless people.
