Iron Blossoms - Where Iron Memories Reside, When Art Blooms
Taiping District has a long history and is well-developed in machine tools and hand tool industries, earning the nickname 'Blacksmith's Den.' In response to rising environmental awareness and traditional industries seeking transformation, Taiping iron factories began considering how to reuse leftover waste materials from production and operations, which became the opportunity for the birth of the Taiping Iron Art Festival.
With the goal of promoting local industrial culture and iron art, the Taiping District Office has organized the Taiping Iron Art Festival since 2019 (Year 108), inviting local blacksmith artisans to weld scrap metal into iron sculpture art, transforming them into artistic creators, working together to build Taiping's local artistic and cultural characteristics. Since 2021 (Year 110), it has further connected with National Chin-Yi University of Technology and civil organizations. Through industry, government, and academia cooperation and promotion, it hopes to lead the public to understand iron art and preserve ironworking culture.
Through the Ministry of Education's University Social Responsibility Practice Program, National Chin-Yi University of Technology pools school resources and cross-university faculty expertise, playing a role in integrated marketing and expanding visibility for the Iron Art Festival. It also introduces school curriculum resources, allowing students to understand and participate in industrial culture and technology in an accessible way, enhancing their employment competitiveness.
National Chin-Yi University of Technology, joining hands with the Taiping District Office, holds annual touring exhibitions of iron art works at cultural spaces under the Bureau of Cultural Affairs. In 2023 (Year 112), the first stop was at the Huludun Cultural Center. In 2024 and 2025 (Years 113 & 114), it moved to the Tun District Art Center. In 2026 (Year 115), it will extend to the Harbor District Art Center, cross-regionally touring to display artisan creations and engage in dialogue and exchange with people from the mountain, coastal, and Tun districts.
The exhibition selects many vibrant and aesthetically pleasing iron sculpture creations, covering works by ironwork artisans, students, and creators interested in iron sculpture art. It showcases the local creativity and design power of Taichung and Taiping, injecting new-era thinking and creativity into the traditional ironworking industry, inheriting the spirit of hardware art, and conveying the concepts of artistic regeneration and environmental sustainability!
