Exhibition Concept:
Inviting artist Ko Liang-chih (柯良志), a native of Taichung City, to present works centered on contemporary calligraphic art and the actual scenes of the park's reuse project. The exhibition features the "Jin Bu Tong Bi" (今不同璧) corrugated iron series and the "Corrugated Iron Writing Project." On-site production using the park's corrugated iron will take place from October 9 to 11, 2026.
Ko Liang-chih excels at presenting the diverse states of calligraphy. "Jin Bu Tong Bi" artistically replicates street graffiti and spray-painted words from an artistic perspective, preserving those vibrant yet fleeting visual landscapes. "Corrugated Iron Writing Project" is composed of 29 pieces of corrugated iron and 1 set of construction iron gates, assembled to mimic the form of a construction site fence. It replicates the "Liu Style" (劉體) (from the copybook "Commercial Vocabulary" edited by Mr. Liu Yuan-hsiang (劉元祥)), a font popular for sign writing in the 1970s-80s, recreating street scenes.
This legible, square, standardized, and functionally aesthetic font was extensively used to write necessary information on corrugated iron. Even today, when manual handwriting has been largely replaced, it remains ubiquitous on the streets, forming a precious collective memory of Taiwan.
The styles of masters become calligraphic paradigms through systematization, yet excessive imitation leads to collective aesthetic fatigue. The "deviation" in the process of "copying" is explored by the artist through physical acts of replicating these "atypical" writings. This dialectically examines the ambiguous position of calligraphic art and writing in contemporary society, pondering the connections between text, streetscapes, and memory.
Ko Liang-chih
Born in Taichung City, holds a Ph.D. from the Graduate Institute of Fine Arts, National Taiwan Normal University,
currently serves as a full-time associate professor in the Department of Fine Arts Industry, National Taitung University.
His long-term creative focus has been on social issues and the minutiae of life, dialectically examining the spirit of traditional brush and ink and contemporary concepts.
Through contextual displacement and symbolic reconstruction, he explores the cultural context and contemporary expressive power of calligraphic art.
