Hollow Heart, Proud Integrity: Liu Chih-ying's Bamboo Carving Creation Decade Exhibition

Liu Chih-ying was born in Taoyuan in 1962 and is a purely handcrafted bamboo carving creator specializing in brush pots and armrests; driven by passion, he taught himself bamboo carving in 2016. Over a decade of exploration, he unexpectedly discovered that his craft coincided with the 'thin-ground relief' technique created by the Qing dynasty bamboo carving master Wu Chih-fan. Its characteristic is that the composition and carving occupy only a part of the bamboo surface, while the rest of the bamboo ground is thinly scraped and left completely plain (reserving blank space), which particularly highlights the charm and layered beauty of bamboo carving works. This 'Hollow Heart, Proud Integrity' bamboo carving exhibition is a milestone achievement of his ten-year creative career, featuring a total of 40 works with rich themes, covering historical figure stories, commoner life, folk beliefs, flowers, birds, insects, and plants. He hopes to exchange ideas and receive guidance from bamboo carving enthusiasts, jointly protecting and promoting this exquisite traditional craft.
