Wood Sculpture Conservation 101

Date: 2026-01-01 — 2026-12-31 Organizer: 朱銘
The Ju Ming Museum has long been dedicated to conservation research. In 2024, it completed 159 conservation cases, including commissions from domestic and international clients. Since its founding, the museum has continuously developed conservation systems and research techniques, actively addressing the preservation challenges posed by Taiwan's humid climate. The completion of 159 artwork conservations in 2024, including commissions from the New Taipei City Art Museum, the Keelung City Bureau of Cultural Tourism and Ho Bee Land in Singapore, demonstrates a high level of trust and the professional strength of the conservation team. In the same year, facing 139 artworks damaged by Typhoon Saola, the team undertook immediate repairs, highlighting that conservation is not just about preserving art but also a struggle against nature and time.

"Keep it the old way; it's not good if it changes." This statement by Mr. Ju Ming (朱銘) perfectly captures the spirit of art conservation. "Wood Sculpture Conservation 101" is an exhibition that starts from a beginner's perspective, guiding the audience to understand the profession of conservation, which combines science and art.

The exhibition title "101" is borrowed from the code for introductory courses in American universities, symbolizing the starting point for learning foundational knowledge. From artwork diagnosis and cleaning to visual retouching, every step requires caution and respect, emphasizing the principle of "minimal intervention" to preserve the original appearance and historical traces of the artwork. "Wood Sculpture Conservation 101" is not just a professional sharing; it is a collective action that respects art and reveres time. It reveals the unseen professional work behind museum operations and conveys that art is not only about creation but also requires subsequent protection and care. This exhibition is not merely a technical introduction; it is a promotion of awareness about art preservation. Let us step into the world of conservation together and learn about the crucial project of extending the life of art.
