The story of <i>Ching-chi</i> springs from this question, breaking away from the settings of various versions of <i>The Legend of the White Snake</i> (《白蛇傳》) in classical texts, operas, films, and television, to develop a new narrative. This play seems like a sequel to the White Snake story, or perhaps a meta-perspective on it. A newly created character—a "Japanese wandering knight" named Chi-kuang (吉光) who yearns for monsters—is introduced. The alien intervention of "chivalry" deconstructs this human-demon romance, re-exploring the essence of "love," as if it were a modern lover's discourse.
