The founding of Mo-Yuan Hsiao-Chi (墨緣小集)
Forty years ago, many students followed calligrapher Hsieh Tsung-an (謝宗安) to study calligraphy. As conditions gradually matured, Master Hsieh formed several "Mo"-character sub-groups for his disciples, and thus Mo-Yuan Hsiao-Chi was born. We gather regularly to practice and exchange ideas, making friends through ink and cultivating benevolence through friendship. Every one or two years we hold a public exhibition: first, to review our learning achievements and strive for continuous improvement; second, to allow sub-groups to interact, observe, and learn from each other; third, to promote the art of calligraphy and use it to benefit society.
Bound by ink for forty years, the legacy of old roots and new branches: As time passes, while maintaining its core members, Hsiao-Chi continuously absorbs excellent "new blood." The blending and stimulation of old and new members give the group's creative style both the steady depth of traditional stele-school calligraphy and the lively versatility of modern calligraphic art. Yet times change and circumstances shift. Although Master Hsieh has passed away for many years, we still follow his instruction to connect through brush and ink and thus know each other through the Way and art.
The works of Mo-Yuan Hsiao-Chi members are diverse in style. This year's "Joy in Calligraphy" joint exhibition covers various script types: standard (kai), cursive, clerical, and seal. Inheriting the mantle of Hsieh Tsung-an (謝宗安), members are deeply rooted in Han and Wei stele studies, with steady brushwork and vivid spirit, emphasizing the literati spirit of "one sheet of paper, one inkstone, clarifying the mind and seeing one's true nature."
