2026 World Book Day - Open Up the Translated World Theme Book Exhibition
"The limits of my language mean the limits of my world."— Ludwig Wittgenstein
In the era of globalization, learning a second language has become a trend, but why do we learn?
The answer can be pure interest, compulsory coursework, or for communication, for work. Language is no longer just grammar and vocabulary from textbooks; it is more like a key that takes us into different cultures and lifestyles.
Perhaps it's the lines that repeatedly appear when you binge-watch dramas, the chorus you can't help but hum along to, the recipe where you constantly check ingredient amounts, or the first time you leave a comment in a foreign language on social media, checking repeatedly before pressing send.
This book exhibition takes "bilingualism" as its theme, extending to "language expands the world." Through book selections on cross-cultural communication, translation essays, and cross-cultural exchange topics, it allows readers to see different ways of thinking between the lines, switch perspectives, and thus understand the world.
Sung Ying-tang (宋瑛堂), a prolific translator, selflessly shares his perspectives and reflections from over thirty years on the path of translation, also bringing practical industry strategies and experiences from the translation field; Chang Wei-chung (張維中), residing in Japan, delivers Tokyo daily life for you, discovering her stubborn yet adorable true side; follow forensic pathologist Judy into another translation pathway, bravely facing the million faces of death. Many cases turn into stories on paper; after reading, it feels like dying several times yet being reborn several times; there's also an alternative language lesson spoken by trees with their lives, which humans cannot hear. To read the body language of trees, follow forest guardian Peter Wohlleben and embrace a tree wholeheartedly.
Starting with language, open a book, and open a way of viewing the world.
