Unlocked! The North Signal Tower Permanent Exhibition

The North Signal Tower at Kaohsiung Port Station is currently the only signal tower in the nation that has completely preserved the signal tower building and facilities such as interlocking devices, linkage iron pipes, and switch points. After a 14-year hiatus, the North Signal Tower was restored and opened for use in 2022 (Year 111 of the Republic of China calendar), showcasing the railway interlocking technology of a century ago through its restored classic design.
The core and most complex function of the North Signal Tower is achieving the interlocking between 'signal and signal,' 'signal and switch point,' and 'switch point and switch point.' The interlocking panel ensures coordinated operation among the levers, which then 'remotely control' distant switch points and signals via electrical and mechanical means, ensuring coordination among these devices as well. In the era before radio, signal tower staff could also control and monitor the entire vehicle dispatch of Kaohsiung Port Station through loudspeaker telephones.
