The Power of a Provincial Graduate: Huang Tsan-hsu's Mansion – Yilan's First Provincial Graduate Residence Permanent Exhibition
Huang Tsan-hsu (黃纘緒)—the first provincial graduate (chü-jen) in Yilan's history—spent his life writing a story of "helping others achieve."
Stepping into Huang the Provincial Graduate's Mansion is not just entering a century-old house; it is stepping into a deeply rooted life journey. This was his former residence and is Yilan's only surviving mansion of a provincial graduate. The exhibition narrates his journey from studying diligently despite poverty, passing the imperial examinations, to returning home and dedicating himself to local development. Huang Tsan-hsu managed irrigation canals, advocated for temple construction, and promoted Pei-kuan (北管) culture. He transformed his personal scholarly honor into a light that illuminated his hometown, truly practicing the literati value of "the gentleman helps others achieve beauty."
With the theme "The Power of a Provincial Graduate," the exhibition, through main hall furniture, calligraphy crafts, the imperial examination system, and Pei-kuan opera, uses scene recreations and interactive experiences to guide you through the层层考验 (layers of tests) of the Qing dynasty imperial examinations. Feel how Huang Tsan-hsu stood out through perseverance and信念 (belief), transforming knowledge and character into a force for helping others.
Today, Huang the Provincial Graduate's Mansion is not just a courtyard house; it is an inspirational base about responsibility, goodwill, and influence. We sincerely invite you to step into history and await you to light up the next story of goodness.
