Online Exhibition: "Who Made Kaohsiung Bigger?" – Centennial Online Exhibition of Kaohsiung's Establishment as a City

Date: 2026-01-01 — 2026-12-31 Organizer: 高雄市立歷史博物館
On December 25, 1924, the Kaohsiung City Office was formally established, heralding a new era for Kaohsiung as a local self-governing organization with independent finances. Over the past century, Kaohsiung City has developed from a harbor-side town into an industrial metropolis and is now an important metropolitan area in southern Taiwan. If asked who made Kaohsiung bigger? The "industries" at different stages, which effectively boosted the economy, created jobs, and stimulated domestic demand, are the key. First, seaport logistics laid the city's foundation, followed by the chemical industry, petrochemical industry, export processing zone, heavy industry, and even the high-tech industry in recent years, each injecting momentum and driving various daily and extraordinary life industries. This special exhibition inventories 19 industries and artisans, broadly divided into two themes: first, those who contributed to exports, and second, those who provided support for the city's domestic demand. We briefly describe the industries, outline the artisans, convey a bit of history through images and objects, and pay tribute to the efforts of countless practitioners. Industries and the artisans behind them shape the city's character. The people who gathered from various places and worked hard in each industry are the driving force behind the city's development and the Kaohsiung people who shaped Kaohsiung. At this moment of the centennial commemoration, we should be even more grateful to these people who have silently contributed to Kaohsiung. Within the complex industrial system, this special exhibition inventories 19 industries and artisans, broadly divided into two themes: first, those who contributed to exports, and second, those who provided support for the city's domestic demand. We briefly describe the industries, outline the artisans, convey a bit of history through images and objects, and pay tribute to the efforts of countless practitioners.
