Online Exhibition: A Tale of Two Cities in Fengyi
During the Qing Dynasty's rule of Taiwan, Fengshan County once had two county seats, one new and one old. This is unique in Taiwan's history and has profoundly influenced the later historical development of Kaohsiung. The formation of Fengshan County's Old City and New City was not only due to local uprisings and turmoil but also related to the rulers' and people's views on which functions the county seat should emphasize. Should it be located in the Old City of Tsoying, which was advantageous for coastal defense, or should it be in Hsia-pi-t'ou, the economic center? These two views contended for over a hundred years. Ultimately, the Fengshan County seat moved to Hsia-pi-t'ou, leaving behind the original Hsing-lung Chuang, which was primarily for defense. After the 20th century, with advances in transportation, construction, and technology, the New City developed into an economically and culturally prosperous area. Entering the 21st century, the Old City has regained attention due to the opening of the High-Speed Rail, railway undergrounding, and the city government's "Reappearing the Old City" project. Looking to the future, we hope the two cities will radiate new vitality and once again lead the splendor of Greater Kaohsiung. To understand the historical context of Kaohsiung City, let us explore "A Tale of Two Cities in Fengyi" together.
