Ling-yun Yu-feng Matsu Calligraphy and Painting Joint Exhibition

Date: 2026-05-16 — 2026-06-14 Organizer: 凌雲御風馬祖書畫聯展籌備會
[Blending the Affection of Mountains and Seas, the Charm of Ink on the Islands]

When unrestrained brushwork meets Matsu's breathtaking mountains and seas, an artistic feast that cleanses the soul is about to arrive with the wind.

This exhibition is organized by the Cultural Affairs Department of Lienchiang County Government, specially inviting renowned artists from the Ling-yun Calligraphy and Painting Association to gather together. With delicate brushstrokes and unique perspectives, the artists transform Matsu's unique Min-dong stone house settlements and the magnificent scenery of the Qin Sea into flowing ink charm and colors on rice paper.

Whether it's the vigorous and powerful calligraphy or the profound ink landscape paintings, they all exhibit the free-spiritedness and grandeur akin to "Ling-yun Yu-feng" (Soaring Above the Clouds, Riding the Wind). We sincerely invite you to step into the world of calligraphy and painting and feel the infinite charm woven by the islands and art.

Connecting Matsu's military ties with the fragrance of ink! The "Ling-yun Yu-feng Matsu Calligraphy and Painting Joint Exhibition" is on display from now until June 14. The exhibits not only include General Lai Tsung-yen's (賴宗煙) classic cursive script masterpiece "Night Mooring at Maple Bridge" but also feature the powerful works of his son Lai Shang-fu (賴尚甫), Chairman of the Ling-yun Calligraphy and Painting Association and former Lieutenant General Superintendent of the Air Force Academy Chen Sheng-wen (陳盛文), as well as calligraphy and painting works by masters from the General Lai Tsung-yen Calligraphy Association.

General Lai Tsung-yen once served as the Magistrate of Lienchiang County during the period of military administration. Coming from a scholarly family, he started writing Spring Festival couplets for neighbors from the age of 6 or 7, cultivating his ink field for over 70 years. He served as the appointed Magistrate of Matsu from 1986 to 1989, making outstanding contributions to Matsu's infrastructure during his tenure, including actively advocating for the establishment of the Matsu Motor Vehicles Office, initiating the planning of Nangan Airport, completing the Meishi Gas Station, and preparing for the construction of the County Sports Stadium.

Proficient in multiple calligraphy scripts, he vigorously promoted arts and culture during his tenure, including promoting school Chinese Orchestra clubs and calligraphy classes, nurturing many artistic seeds for Matsu. Many of his former students remain active in the local community to this day. After stepping down following the lifting of martial law, he was still frequently invited back to Matsu to instruct calligraphy workshops, holding deep affection for Matsu. After Lai Tsung-yen passed away in 2021, his son Lai Shang-fu inherited his father's wishes, continuing this covenant with Matsu.
