Hsiungchen North Gate Permanent Exhibition
Since its completion in 1876, Hsiungchen North Gate has served various purposes, including military use, a recreation area for Railway Ministry employees, a workplace for Kaohsiung Harbor Bureau units, and a signal tower. It was regrettable that the monument's outline was obscured by privately occupied buildings and abandoned dormitories. Since 2004, the Kaohsiung City Government has worked diligently on communication and coordination, gradually demolishing buildings around the monument that were incompatible with the landscape. By 2016, with funding support from the Ministry of Culture for the Hsingbin Project, the opportunity finally arrived to commence the monument's restoration, and it reopened to the public at the end of 2021.
Because the Kaohsiung City Government's Cultural Affairs Bureau was particularly rigorous in researching the fort's original appearance during the entire restoration process, striving to restore the "North-South Barracks' Miller Truss" and the "Three-in-One Soil Roof Slab Structure," visitors entering this space after restoration can directly feel the spatial atmosphere of the Qing Dynasty barracks at Hsiungchen North Gate.
The unique geographical location of Hsiungchen North Gate makes it not only the best spot to watch large ships entering the harbor and the sunset at Sizihwan (西子灣), but the distinctive historical spaces of the North and South Barracks are also planned with historical theme displays. It is hoped that the monument will become an ever-present source of aesthetic nourishment in citizens' lives and a cultural landmark they can be proud of.
