Ch'iao-tzu-t'ou · Pathfinding Chronicles – Kaohsiung Ch'iao-t'ou Special Exhibition

Date: 2026-01-01 — 2026-06-28 Organizer: 高雄市立歷史博物館
Ch'iao-t'ou is a place where multiple paths of water, sugar, people, and the future intertwine.
Four hundred years ago, traces of indigenous peoples and records of Han Chinese reclamation and trade were left here. The Tien-pao River, which runs through the northern part of Ch'iao-t'ou, nurtured settlements and also nourished family and faith networks. As time passed, sugarcane became the economic lifeline. From traditional sugar mills to modern sugar factories during the Japanese colonial period, accompanied by the laying of railways, Ch'iao-t'ou ushered in industrial innovation and prosperity. After the war, it was established as a township, and residents coalesced around a "Ch'iao-tzu-t'ou consciousness." From the Ch'iao-t'ou Incident to the farmers' movement, this place became an important landmark for democracy in Taiwan. Today, with the MRT crisscrossing and a science park poised for development, Ch'iao-t'ou is turning a new page. This exhibition guides the audience through four paths to explore the life map of Ch'iao-t'ou, seeing how this town was born from water, prospered from sugar, gathered because of people, and continues to move towards a renewed future.
