2026 The 11th MAKAPAH Art Awards
Taiwan's Indigenous cultures are profound and introspective, with unique artistic expressions. Whether it's ceremonial norms, life rituals, or the spirit of patterns, the moving cultural connotations within are worthy of careful exploration. Since 2013 (Year 102), the Council of Indigenous Peoples has been holding the "MAKAPAH Art Awards," now (Year 115) entering its 11th edition. It has become one of the important events in Taiwan's art scene, attracting thousands of photography entries and hundreds of painting entries annually. Each year, many entries demonstrate a deeper understanding and experience of Indigenous life, culture, and traditions.
"MAKAPAH" originates from the Amis language, meaning "beautiful, handsome, pretty, admirable." True to its name, this art award aims to lead the public into Indigenous homelands through artistic creation, capturing the beauty of culture and the truth of life through lenses and brushes. Through the competition, it not only provides a stage for creators to express their inspiration but also encourages society to appreciate the cultural connotations of Indigenous peoples from different perspectives, thereby deepening public understanding and appreciation of the unique cultures on this land.
As the master artist Rodin said, "The world is not lacking in beauty, but in eyes that discover it." This edition of the MAKAPAH Art Awards continues this spirit, with the core concept of "Discovering the Beauty of Indigenous Peoples." It invites participants to capture the subtle light and shadow of Indigenous cultures through methods such as documentary photography, creative expression, realistic or abstract painting, etc. Themes include but are not limited to traditional rituals, mythological stories, portraiture, costume features, etc., interpreting culture through art, allowing the beauty of Indigenous peoples to be seen, felt, and treasured.
