2026 Taiwan Dance Memory Map – Dance Writing Workshop
Connecting the past, present, and future of dance through dance writing.

Dance, and performing arts in general, is a form of ephemeral creation. The dynamics, imagery, rhythm, and coordination or conflict between bodies presented during a performance often become mere memories after the curtain falls. So, is it possible to leave behind a readable, accumulable landscape for dance through writing?

Dance writing takes many forms, whether prose, documentary, critique, or research, all can serve as bridges connecting 'the performance that exists only in the moment' with 'readers who were not present,' allowing the dance experience to be extended and transmitted.

In conjunction with the dance history project 'Taiwan Dance Memory Map,' the 2026 Dance Writing Workshop will deconstruct the possibilities of dance writing from three perspectives: 'Body,' 'Documentation,' and 'Time.' The course will start from understanding 'why does the body move this way?', tracing how culture, history, and memory leave traces in bodily dynamics, and then experiencing the power of words—whether critique, reporting, interviews, research writing, or marketing copy, all can retranslate the live experience on stage through text.

Writing plays a key role in the performing arts ecosystem. This workshop hopes to invite more partners who are sensitive to dance to join the writing ranks, while also cultivating professional writers with advanced skills. The course is planned with 'Professional Writing Class' and 'Public Introductory Class' running concurrently, and will include 'General Co-learning' sessions to promote exchange and dialogue among participants with different backgrounds.

Event Time and Themes

2026 April 11 (Sat) – 2026 April 12 (Sun) 10:00-18:00
Unit A: Dimensions of the Body
Starting from the kinetic energy of diverse cultural contexts, explore multiple methods of 'moving the body, observing the body, writing the body.' The path begins with the physical dynamics of contemporary indigenous dance troupes, extends to the improvisational development of contemporary dance bodies, and through the interweaving of perspectives from dance practitioners watching dance, breaks habitual viewing frameworks, leading participants to expand a full-sensory vision and see the cultural codes hidden behind movement.

2026 June 27 (Sat) – 2026 June 28 (Sun) 10:00-18:00 (*Professional class dance appreciation until 20:30)
Unit B: The Weight of Documentation
Dance is recorded and translated through media, and form also shapes creation. Documentation gives works and figures a second life, guiding us to learn how to precisely capture the essence of a figure's spirit and dynamic, transforming fleeting moments into eternal records with emotional connection and life warmth.

2026 August 22 (Sat) – 2026 August 23 (Sun) 10:00-18:00
Unit C: Imprints of Time
How did today's dance aesthetics evolve? We will look back at key footprints in art history and dance development, clarifying the origins of contemporary bodily forms. Among the fragmented imprints left by time, learn to dialogue with different eras and reconstruct narrative trajectories belonging to this land.

2026 November 27 (Fri) – 2026 November 29 (Sun) (*Professional class Taiwan Dance Platform program appreciation)
Unit D: Practice and Voice (Professional Class only)
The power of words lies in moving from the classroom to the public sphere. During the Taiwan Dance Platform, participants will conduct frontline observation and interviews, and under the guidance of mentors, polish their thoughts into influential articles, reclaiming the initiative in narrative and completing their own vocal practice.
