After shedding the workplace label of a state-owned enterprise, 68-year-old Liao Ming-ts'an (廖明燦), whose grandchildren are already in junior high school, has become a veritable retiree.
His long-drawn-out retired life has become monotonous and repetitive; not only is his health a red flag, but the three-generation household seems to exist in name only. Ming-ts'an jokes that the family's happiness seems not to belong to him, that no one listens when he speaks, and that when they do listen, no one reacts. He begins to doubt himself.
He doesn't know when it started, but he began buying lottery tickets regularly, as if vaguely imagining: as long as he holds an asset in his hand, he will be respected, needed, and listened to.
One day, the lucky ball descends, and he discovers he is the jackpot winner of 1.1 billion.
