[Weiwuying Hour] Shankouda Southern Band "Sounds from the Land"
Starting from traditional folk songs and combining them with the colorful diversity of contemporary music, the Hakka-language creations of the Shankouda Southern Band walk the line between the elegant and the popular, widely loved by the general public while maintaining rigorous and solid musical content. Since its formation in 1997, the band has released 15 original albums. Beyond direct new arrangements of traditional folk songs, there are more re-creations that delve deep into the charm of folk ballads, with many details in original works also deeply embedded with traditional folk vocabulary.

The Shankouda Southern Band, in the form of a standard jazz rhythm section, easily connects with contemporary musical syntax, making it accessible and relatable for the audience. However, no matter how profound the music, a certain degree of smoothness and pleasantness remains the unchanging truth for connecting with the audience, which is also the musical characteristic and pursuit of the Shankouda Southern Band. Extensive collaboration with musicians from different fields is another factor shaping the musical diversity of "Shankouda." "Improvisation" is an important feature. This program will feature longtime collaborator, jazz trombonist Teng Yi-chun.

Team Introduction

Shankouda Southern Band

In 1997, Yen Chih-wen founded the music group "Shankouda Band" with the aim of promoting contemporary Hakka music and released his first solo album. Hakka new music gradually emerged from hidden corners into the mainstream. With the spread of musical influence and information, a new generation of creators successively engaged in mother-tongue music creation, creating a trend known as the Hakka music renaissance. After a decade of hard work, the Shankouda Band became a leader in Hakka new music.

In 2026, the Shankouda Band enters a new phase. In recent years, the band's founder, Yen Chih-wen, has invested significant energy in his hometown of Pingtung, bringing a shining light to the traditional Hakka village of Hsinpi, which had long been overlooked. Having long viewed the world from Taipei, the creative source of Shankouda has always been the land and culture of home. Time eventually guides the band along the path of homecoming, not pre-planned, but following the natural course. True to its name, the Shankouda Southern Band members all hail from Kaohsiung and Pingtung. Lead vocalist and guitarist Yen Chih-wen, pianist (also cellist, saxophonist) Chung Cheng, bassist Tang Ming-hung, and drummer Liu Hsin-yi are all experienced and skilled musicians in their respective fields. The inherent qualities of "Southerners" are sure to infuse "Shankouda" with a different musical essence than before.
