War Requiem
"War Requiem" is an experimental classic by British avant-garde film pioneer Derek Jarman. Presented in a wordless form, the film blends newsreel footage from World War I with images of the Hiroshima atomic bombing, and is based on the poems of Wilfred Owen and the choral work of composer Benjamin Britten. Through the perspective of an old soldier played by Laurence Olivier, it profoundly reflects on the cruelty and sacrifice of war. This work has a strong visual style and is rich in symbolism; it is both an indictment of war and implicitly contains Jarman's personal life insights from battling illness, making it highly artistically compelling.
