Supported by the Ministry of Culture's National Language Overall Development Plan: 2026 Miaoli County Outstanding Performing Arts Troupe - Yi Lan Hsuan Puppet Theater (逸蘭軒掌中劇團) "City of Thorny Bamboo - Sinkan Community" with Pre-performance Talk (2 Sessions)
Program Introduction:
On the land surrounded by thorny bamboo, there is a name that once truly existed but is gradually being forgotten — "Sinkan Community."
"City of Thorny Bamboo - Sinkan Community" draws inspiration from the history of the Pingpu ethnic group in Houlung, Miaoli, blending traditional Puppet Theater, Taiwanese dialogue, Taokas language, and modern theater aesthetics to reinterpret the story of land, faith, and ethnic memory.
The story is set during the Qing Dynasty, as external forces gradually approached, the people of Sinkan Community faced land loss, cultural erosion, and a survival crisis. The chieftain "Mao Lao-wei" leads his people in defending their homeland, making difficult choices between faith and reality, as a conflict concerning the fate of the ethnic group quietly unfolds.
This play is performed on a proscenium stage, using scene transitions, mobile symbolic sets, and prop changes to create different spatial atmospheres such as settlements, rituals, coastlines, and thorny bamboo forests. With original music design, traditional puppeteering skills, and an immersive stage atmosphere, it creates a Puppet Theater work that combines a sense of history with contemporary visual style. The performance uses extensive Taiwanese dialogue and ethnic language elements, allowing the audience to re-experience the deep cultural memory of Taiwan's land in the theater. When the sea breeze blows through the thorny bamboo, history will be spoken once again.
Troupe Introduction: Yi Lan Hsuan Puppet Theater (逸蘭軒掌中劇團)
Yi Lan Hsuan Puppet Theater was founded in 2018 and has long been dedicated to the creation, performance, and cultural promotion of traditional Puppet Theater. It has been consecutively selected as a Miaoli County Outstanding Performing Arts Troupe. Rooted in the Wu Chou Yuan school of Puppet Theater, the troupe integrates modern theater, parent-child education, and contemporary issues to develop original works that combine traditional skills with an innovative spirit.
Recent works cover diverse themes including environmental education, Taiwanese history and culture, promotion of local languages, and parent-child theater. The troupe actively engages with schools, local cultural venues, and theater spaces, continuously expanding the connection between Puppet Theater and contemporary audiences.
"City of Thorny Bamboo - Sinkan Community" is one of the troupe's important annual productions in recent years, taking local Miaoli history and Pingpu ethnic culture as its creative core, using Puppet Theater to re-examine the memory of the land and the facets of Taiwan's multiculturalism.
