Splendor of Symbiosis: The Brilliant Era of Japanese Art and Its Encounter with Taiwan

Date: 2026-06-09 — 2026-09-20 Organizer: 師大美術館
From the late 19th to the early 20th century, with the establishment of the modern state system and the promotion of official exhibition systems, Japanese art rapidly transformed at the intersection of East and West. The maturation of art education systems in Tokyo and Kyoto, along with the parallel development of Western realism and Japanese tradition, generated unprecedented creative energy. During the same period, Taiwanese pioneer artists traveled to Japan, participating in the Imperial Exhibition and official art stages, broadening their horizons through competition and exchange, gradually shaping a modern artistic face belonging to Taiwan.

"Splendor of Symbiosis" selects masterpieces of Japanese art from the Edo to Showa periods, spanning Japanese painting, Western painting, sculpture, and crafts such as metalwork, cloisonné, lacquer art, ceramics, and paper stencils. From materials and techniques to aesthetic thinking, it outlines an intertwined and symbiotic art historical panorama. The exhibition takes "encounter" and "transformation" as its axis, presenting the deep connection between Taiwan and Japan from learning and competition to self-generation.
