Special Lecture on Eastern and Western Art: Ancient Architecture of Shanxi and the Portrait Art of Van Eyck

Date: 2026-05-19 — 2026-08-18 Organizer: 新月藝文
Malaysian art history scholar Hsu Tou-ta (許斗達) has specially planned four lectures, taking everyone across eight hundred years of time and space. Not only will we explore, through the discoveries of Liang Ssu-ch'eng (梁思成) and Lin Hui-yin (林徽因), the Wu-t'ai Mountains (五台山) of Shanxi and Ying County (應縣), investigating how the Fo-kuang Temple (佛光寺) and the Ying County Wooden Pagoda (應縣木塔) used wood and stone structures to embody the grandeur of a great nation, and how they created sacred spaces through mechanical balance.

Additionally, we will travel to 15th-century Flanders to explore how the Northern Renaissance master Van Eyck, through meticulous realist techniques and mirror-like contracts, proclaimed the birth of the "individual" in history.

Starting May 19, 2026, once a month on Tuesday evenings at 7:00 PM, you are welcome to join Teacher Hsu Tou-ta (許斗達) as we journey from the structural logic of Chinese architecture to the visual revolution of Western portraiture, to explore: the ancient architecture of Shanxi and the portrait art of Van Eyck, witnessing those key moments that changed history!
