Paiwan Tribe Applique Embroidery (tjemenun) Vest and Skirt Making Class

Date: 2026-04-13 — 2026-06-29 Organizer: 高圓夢
(1) The applique embroidery of the Paiwan tribe is a garment craft of immense visual impact and rich cultural hierarchical significance. This technique is commonly seen among the Southern Paiwan (Pingtung area) and some Eastern Paiwan tribes. This course is based on the core Paiwan social systems of "Kagalutjan" (class inheritance) and "Cemas" (soul/guardian spirit concept), viewing the applique embroidery craft as a "family tree worn on the body." Reshaping the reverence of class aesthetics: The course emphasizes the relationship between the Paiwan Kagalutjan (class system) and the right to use totems. By recounting the origins of the hundred-pace viper (ancestral spirit guardian) and the human head pattern (glory and life), participants will understand that the color and pattern of each applique piece carry the tribe's social ethics and identity norms, rather than being mere artistic creation. Practicing the spirit of "handicraft as cultivation": Each back-and-forth stitch of the chain embroidery is a dialogue with the ancestral spirits. The course emphasizes the steadiness of the hand and the settling of the mind, allowing participants to experience the focus and piety of traditional artisans when making ceremonial garments through meticulous, slow work, achieving resonance between skill and spirit. Promoting the contemporary translation of traditional culture: Upholding the spirit of "life is culture," the course guides participants to integrate the tribe's splendid aesthetic into modern daily items while respecting the traditional totem norms. This is not only a revitalization of the craft but also an infusion of contemporary vitality into tribal aesthetics, transforming them into a cultural entity that can be inherited and developed.
