[New Moon Art Appreciation] Western Art Appreciation: The 20th Century - A Chaotic New World

Date: 2026-07-08 — 2026-12-30 Organizer: 新月藝文
The 20th century was an era of chaos: the old world completely collapsed, and a new order never arrived. Within just 50 years, two world wars erupted in succession. After the wars ended, regional conflicts continued unabated, including the Vietnam War, the Korean War, and so on, right up to the 21st century today. In this century of conflict, art also changed rapidly, with various artistic movements evolving and replacing each other at an unimaginable speed—something that had never happened in the previous millennia. Are these bizarre and dazzling art forms modern art? Or are they merely fleeting sparks? Let us pause and consider: how exactly is the relationship between artistic creation and social phenomena manifested? Starting January 21, 2025, every Wednesday from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, art historian Professor Chiu Chien-i (邱健一) will lead his Western art history course into the 20th century. Welcome to learn about and appreciate how artists attempted to write a new language for an as-yet-unborn new era.
