In the late spring and early summer of 1980, Van Gogh came to the countryside to recuperate, far from the hustle and bustle. At that time, not yet famous, he was about to draw the final stroke of his legendary life. Thin and delicate, he walked into the fields with his paintbrush; he encountered charming women and also confronted again the complicated relationship with his brother Theo.... Pialat uses slices of daily life from the Impressionist master Van Gogh's final days, straightforwardly filming an "atypical" Van Gogh biography. It does not beautify tragic grandeur, nor does it reveal dramatic spectacle, but instead gently recounts fleeting moments of the present, daring to love and hate, about the true feelings of an artist's soul.
