King's Lecture Series: The Boat Sails Taiwan

Date: 2026-06-21 Organizer: 林伯奇
Inviting Teacher Lin Po-chi (林伯奇), author of "The Boat Sails Taiwan," to the Wang Boat Culture Museum in Pingtung County to share field stories from years of visiting Wang Yeh (Royal Lords) beliefs and Wang Boat (Royal Boat) culture across Taiwan. Starting from a single Wang Boat, rediscover Taiwan's maritime culture and local society.

Through field investigation, Teacher Lin Po-chi breaks the stereotype that "only southern Taiwan has the Ying Wang (Welcoming the Royal Lords) and Wang Boat culture," leading readers to sites of Wang Yeh belief in northern, central, southern, eastern Taiwan, and outlying islands. From the northern region's river cruises and Wang Boat patrols, the central region's diverse Qi'an (Praying for Peace) and Song Shunfeng (Sending Favorable Winds) rituals, to the southern region's strictly regulated Ying Wang ceremonies and exquisite Wang Boat craftsmanship. Finally, exploring the belief culture brought by immigrants to the east, and the ancient customs and seafaring spirit preserved on outer islands, presenting the diverse Wang Boat cultures developed according to local conditions across Taiwan.
