In 1934, Pu Yi turned to the Japanese warlords to establish the state of Manchukuo in Northeast China, eager for power but powerless. After defeat in war, he became a prisoner and was only released after ten years of re-education. By then, Pu Yi had become an ordinary commoner, seemingly liberated from the heavy walls.
