Pu Yi became emperor at the mere age of three, confined within the high walls of the Forbidden City. Though living an extravagant imperial life, he was completely isolated from the outside society until he was expelled from the Forbidden City at 19. The new world outside the gates, influenced by Western culture, led him to a life of indulgence. In 1934, Pu Yi turned to the Japanese warlords to establish the state of Manchukuo in Northeast China, eager for power but powerless. After defeat in war, he became a prisoner and was only released after ten years of re-education. By then, Pu Yi had become an ordinary commoner, seemingly liberated from the heavy walls. Years later, he returned to the Forbidden City as a tourist, buying a ticket, filled with emotion...
