When the dull-ice flowers bloom, art teacher Kuo Yun-tien (郭雲天) arrives to teach in the countryside. He discovers that mischievous Ku A-ming (古阿明) has a vivid, imaginative talent for painting; despite his family's poverty, he uses optimistic strokes to depict what he sees. As Kuo vigorously recommends A-ming for a competition, he must also confront the harsh obstacles of reality. Adapted from the original novel by Chung Chao-cheng (鍾肇政), the line "Rich people's children are better at everything" lays bare class reality, while the theme song, accompanied by this tearful story, is sung for generations.
