[Hsin-yueh Art Lecture] Ancient Architecture in Shansi and the Portrait Art of Jan van Eyck
A special lecture by Malaysian art historian Professor Hsu Tou-ta (許斗達) will take the audience across eight hundred years. In the first half, through the discoveries of Liang Ssu-ch'eng (梁思成) and Lin Hui-yin (林徽因), we will delve deep into Mount Wu-t'ai in Shansi and Ying County, analyzing how the Fo-kuang Temple (佛光寺) and the Ying County Wooden Pagoda (應縣木塔) used wood and stone structures to embody the laws of a great nation, creating sacred spaces through mechanical balance. In the second half, we turn to the Northern Renaissance of the fifteenth century, witnessing how Jan van Eyck, through precise realist techniques and mirror-like contracts, proclaimed the birth of the 'individual' in history.
From the structural logic of Chinese architecture to the visual revolution of Western portraiture, we invite you to witness those key moments that changed history.
