[Cultural Lecture] Sentient Spirits in the Human World ~ Starting from 'Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio'
When you think of spirits and monsters, what comes to mind? Are they hideous and fearsome? In Chinese classics, ghosts and spirits have many different faces. From 'Classic of Mountains and Seas' and 'In Search of the Supernatural' to Tang Dynasty tales and 'Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio', folklore and literati together have constructed a rich world of Chinese spirits. However, influenced by religion and Confucian rites, spirits and the living seem to inhabit two different worlds, yet they are so similar: sometimes, humans are more terrifying than spirits, and spirits are more sentient than humans. In this lecture, Teacher Glowing Little Fish will focus on traditional classic works, leading readers into the fantastical and mystical world of Chinese spirits.
