Synopsis:
In 2003, French conductor Pierre travels to the United States for a performance. Before the show, he learns of his mother's passing. After the performance, he returns to France for the funeral, where his old friend Pepinot brings him a diary. This diary belonged to their teacher Clement Mathieu, and the two read it together.
In 1949, the frustrated musician Clement Mathieu arrives to work at a boarding school for troubled children called "Fond de l'Etang" (Bottom of the Pond), taking up the post of supervisor in charge of student life. At the school gate, he sees Pepinot, who is waiting for Saturday to come, believing his father will pick him up then. However, Pepinot does not know his parents died in World War II.
Mathieu discovers the school's headmaster Rachin has a very strict attitude towards disciplining the children, so he tries to treat them with humor and kindness. When student Corrigan sets up a small trap and injures the eye of the school handyman Maxence, Mathieu conceals the perpetrator's identity from the headmaster. In exchange, Corrigan must take care of Maxence during his recovery. The headmaster agrees to this condition, but he does not believe Mathieu can manage the students.
