Ashes of A Rainbow: HSU Pei-Cheng Solo Exhibition
"Ashes of A Rainbow" is a seemingly contradictory image: the rainbow symbolizes fleeting and fluid perception, while ashes suggest structure and traces of existence. Like light that, after dissipating, still leaves a visual afterimage. To me, it is like a clue left by imagination in the labyrinth of time.
——Hsu Pei-cheng (許旆誠)
Hsu Pei-cheng (許旆誠), a painter deeply in love with literature, in his youth always preferred to read the world he lived in like an outsider in solitude. After undergoing changes in life stages, he followed the perspective of his children and once again accepted the hustle and bustle of this world from the beginning, stepping into the life course that inevitably involves daily necessities. Yet in the gaps between picking up and dropping off his children, what constantly surfaced in his mind were rootless flowers, butterflies fluttering in the garden, and Tai-yu (黛玉) and Pao-yu (寶玉) from Dream of the Red Chamber (紅樓夢).
Thus the artist spent many years, pondering back and forth, and created the "Flowers Are Not Flowers" (花非花) series, themed on the Twelve Beauties of Chinling (金陵十二金釵) from the Qing dynasty literary classic Dream of the Red Chamber. With "figures" as the theme—this is a new challenge compared to his past focus on depicting space and environment. Perhaps the Grand View Garden (大觀園) is like a utopia parallel to worldly life, as Hsu Pei-cheng himself describes: "It is a garden between narrative and allegory... Memories of youth and perceptions of middle age interlace within it, allowing dreams, history, and reality to permeate each other."
How does a creator who once insisted on keeping a distance from the world and aspired to be a "dream reader" (夢讀) gradually step into the love, hate, and entanglements of humanity within the complex garden of accumulated time, and then from that chaos sort out his own unique interpretation?
After a solo exhibition absent for many years, Hsu Pei-cheng chooses to share with the audience at Gallery de sol (曜畫廊) his sincere confessions after years of struggle, confusion, and persistence. His unique poetry is like hard bone, humming continuously at the bottom of his creations; the difference is that, under the influence of worldly烟火氣, we see the traces life has left on the artist—magnificent yet elegant, colorful yet distant, like turning page after page of distant literary classics, dreamlike and enchanting, yet vividly penetrating the heart and moving the soul.
Ashes of A Rainbow, perhaps after lifting the colorful illusion, is the invisible thing in the heart that is harder than matter.
