2026 Taiwan Historical Documents Lecture: Taiwanese Agents Before and After WWII
Speaker: Lin Cheng-hui (林正慧), Assistant Research Fellow, Institute of Taiwan History, Academia Sinica.
During WWII, amid the tense conflict in Sino-Japanese relations, various forces—including the Chinese Kuomintang, the Communist Party, and Western powers in China—actively established intelligence networks. In this world of espionage, Taiwanese nationals could hide their identities; their Minnan or Cantonese dialects or clan networks allowed them to pass as Chinese nationals, while their Japanese language skills provided significant advantages in Japanese-controlled areas of China. This made Taiwanese individuals sought-after recruits for various intelligence organizations. However, while seemingly having opportunities on all sides, they could also be caught in the crossfire and suffer.
This lecture will delve into the multiple roles and fateful turns of Taiwanese individuals within intelligence networks before and after WWII, reconstructing the historical profile of Taiwanese agents. The content promises to be fascinating. We sincerely invite those interested in modern Taiwanese history and wartime social issues to participate enthusiastically. The event requires online registration and is completely free.
